7 Essential Questions to Ask Your Teacher for Back to School

Back to school can be optimistic, exciting and scary at the same time. There’s so much to think about like class schedules, school supplies and new outfits. But what else should kids and parents know?

We asked our team what questions you should ask your teacher about the school year, and here’s what they said. Did we forget something? Let us know in the comments.

1. When is Open House?

Most schools have an Open House where you and your family can visit the school, meet the teachers and even walk to your classrooms. And if your school doesn’t have an Open House, you should still visit the school and talk to your teachers before the first day of school.

2. What will students learn this year?

The teacher should be able to tell you what your child will be learning this year and when they will start each subject. Some schools have a curriculum guide that lists all of the subjects for each grade level, so ask if your school has one.

3. How often do you assign homework?

This is a question that will definitely vary from teacher to teacher. Some teachers assign homework every night and some don’t assign any at all. If you have concerns about how many hours of homework your child will be doing each night, talk to their teacher about it.

4. How can students get help with homework?

Some schools have after-school programs where students can get help with homework. If your child’s school doesn’t have one of these, talk to their teacher about finding a tutor or hiring someone to come in and give them extra help.

5. When do you send progress reports and report cards?

Different schools have different policies on when they send progress reports and report cards. Some will send them at the end of every grading period while others will only send one at the end of the school year. If you want to be sure that your child is making progress in their classes, make sure that you talk to their teacher about how often they should be sending reports home.

6. Where can I find more information about classes, events and extra-curricular activities?

Your child’s school should have a website where you can find information about their classes, events and extra-curricular activities. You can also ask someone at the front desk of your child’s school or call them if you are looking for more information.

7. What’s the best way to contact you?

You should have a phone number and email address for your child’s teacher or school. If you have any problems or concerns about the way your student is being treated in school, make sure that you contact them immediately.
